Chatuchak Weekend Market is slightly further out of the centre of Bangkok. It is located at Phahonyothin Road, opposite the Northern bus terminal. Until 1982 this market was held at Sanaam Luang, but was moved because it had outgrown its original home and also because the authorities celebrations. It is a huge conglomeration of 8,672 stallholders spread over an area of 28 acres, selling virtually everything under the sun, and an estimated 200,000 people visit the market over a weekend.
It is probably the best place to buy handicraft and all things Thai in the whole Kingdom. There are antique stalls, basket stalls, textile sellers, shirt vendors, canvers, painters…. etc alone with the usual array of fish sellers, vegetable hawkers, butchers and candle-stick makers. In the last couple of years a number of bars and food stalls geared to tourists and Thai yuppies have also opened so it is possible to rest and recharge before foraging once more. Definitely worth a visit - and allocate half a day at least. The market is open on weekends, officially from 0900 -1800. It’s best to go early in the day.
